When you send money internationally, most services don't just charge a transfer fee — they also give you a worse exchange rate than the real "mid-market" rate (the rate you see on Google or XE.com).

Example: If the real rate is 1 CAD = 61.82 INR, a service with a 2% markup gives you 1 CAD = 60.58 INR instead. On a $500 transfer, that difference costs you $10 — on top of any transfer fee.

The "mid-market rate" is the only honest rate. Wise is the main service that uses it — they charge only a small transparent flat fee. Other services add a markup and keep the difference as hidden profit.

Always compare the total amount received, not just the advertised fee. A "zero fee" transfer can cost more than one with a visible fee if the exchange rate markup is higher.

A newcomer sending $500/month to India at a 2% markup instead of 0% loses about $120 a year — silently. Over 5 years, that's $600 gone.
